Black Angel–Work in progress, 40″ x 30″, 2014

Jack Bentley, the Main Man at Eureka’s First Street Gallery, approached me late last year, wanting me to participate in a show with Jesse Weidel and Seanna Burden in April. That’s next month. I’ll be ready. This painting, the Black Angel, will be the centerpiece of my part of the show. It came to me in bits and pieces. First I had the Angel, but no idea what was happening with her. Then the key thought came to me–the Nazis, or at least the Germans, are Christians too. So it was a short step to having her shoot down British Spitfires in the Battle of Britain, World War 2. I’m having a great time with this painting.

I’m looking forward to being back at First Street–it’ll be my third time there, and at this point, I’m not very interested in showing anywhere else in Humboldt. Show dates are April 1–May 18th, and I’ll be there for the Opening and Closing celebrations. I haven’t showed anywhere in Humboldt for 4 years, so there should be a lot of work that hasn’t been seen outside our home. I look forward to seeing old and new friends during Arts Alive.

Next time: Richard A. Kirk
